My Personal Journey with the Santur

Since I was a child, Persian music has always been more than just melodies to me—it’s been a part of my soul, something that resonated deeply within me. But growing up in a religious family, having a musical instrument was out of reach. Still, that spark of passion never faded. As a young adult, I finally had the chance to buy a **santur**. It felt like opening a door to endless serenity. This beautiful Iranian instrument, with its enchanting and soothing sound, became more than just a tool—it became my companion, calming my mind and comforting my soul. I started taking santur classes, completely immersing myself in the joy of playing, but life wasn’t always kind. With high costs and the responsibility of working to support myself, I had to stop attending classes. Yet, something inside me refused to give up. I decided to teach myself, practicing alone every chance I got. After some time, I saved up enough money to go back to classes and worked hard until I could play confidently.

But as time went on, life got busier. Work, responsibilities, and the stress of daily life pushed me away from my santur. For years, I didn’t play, but my love for it never left me. It stayed dormant, waiting for the right moment. Today, I’ve returned to it with a renewed heart and energy. Playing the santur feels like finding a lost piece of myself again. It’s not just an instrument; it’s a source of peace that grounds me. Now, as I prepare to move to Germany, my santur will be coming with me. I want to keep practicing and learning new Persian melodies before I leave, so that during hard or lonely times in a new country, it becomes my source of calm and strength. More than anything, my dream is to someday share the beauty of this instrument and Persian music with people all over the world. Whether in Germany or elsewhere, I hope to play melodies that connect cultures and make us all feel a little closer. So yes, my santur is more than luggage—it’s a part of my journey. I hope one day, through this instrument, Persian music can touch as many hearts as possible, and we can all enjoy its magic together.
